Annular Eclipse 2012-Santa Fe, NM

While staying with friends in Santa Fe we were lucky enough to be in an amazing spot to view the annular eclipse that just happened on May 20th.  An annular eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly in line, but the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun. Hence the Sun appears as a very bright ring, or annulus, surrounding the outline of the Moon. The next annular eclipse is on May 10, 2013. (Thanks wikipedia)

Too bright to see without special eye wear, the eclipse begins

Debi and Che Che, welding helmet is handy for viewing eclipse

Julie rocks the welding helmet

We noticed the eclipse made incredible shadows through the tree

Ring of Fire

So sweet!

    Bryan and Debi,

the eclipse photos are great. I’ve downloaded them to my computer and will use them next time I teach astronomy. When the sun shines onto the earth through leaves or our hair or any lacy thing, an image of the circular sun is projected. It is like an immense pinhole camera. so…when there is a crescent sun during the eclipse process it happens that we see the crescent sun form in the shadows. Your photos illustrates it perfectly. Every entry of your trip is a delight to read. Soon I’ll post my art pics on FB for a mutual show and tell. Love…
